PlayStation Vita 'Will Be Dynamite,' says GameStop

Posted November 17, 2011 by James Brightman

PlayStation Vita will soon be launching in Japan, but for those of us in America, we'll be waiting until February 22 to get our hands on Sony's newest portable. There are a lot of question marks surrounding Vita and dedicated handheld gaming in general, but leading retailer GameStop appears to be optimistic.

GameStop President Tony Bartel, when asked about trends for next year, said on the earnings call today, "Vita will be dynamite based on the demos and we're very eager to see how thay plays out in a handheld market that has been under pressure."

He also remarked on Nintendo's next console, which launches next year. GameStop's hoping to get another boost from that. "Wii U we think is going to be a very exciting product," Bartel said.

As for the software outlook overall, GameStop doesn't really anticipate growth. "We've said previously in our market models that we see a flattish physical console business extending through 2014," the company stated. That said, GameStop sees "significant double-digit console growth around DLC" and the firm boasted, "our retail share of DLC is extremely dominant."
