PlayStation Vita Sales Get a 'No Comment' From Sony

Posted January 2, 2012 by M.H. Williams

When Sony's PlayStation Vita debuted the week before Christmas, the system sold a respectable 325,000 units out of an original shipment of 500,000. Unfortunately, sales on the week of Christmas dropped to a mere 72,479 units. At the same time, Nintendo's 3DS gained on its previous week's sales number of 367,691 units with an impressive 482,200 units, backed by Super Mario 3D Land, Mario Kart 7, and Monster Hunter Tri G.

When asked about the poor performance of its new portable, Sony decided to keep quiet.

“No comment,” was the reply from Sony Computer Entertainment PR head Satoshi Fukuoka when asked about sales by Bloomberg Japan.

It's also interesting to note that Vita software dropped completely out of the Top 10 on Media Create, after only a single week of sales. The first title to appear in the Top 50 is Minna no Golf/Hot Shots Golf, clocking in at number 37 after debuting at number 7 last week.

It's a rough start for Sony, but perhaps the system can do better in Western markets.
