PlayStation Network Breach Could 'Undermine' Consumer Confidence in Digital, says Dyack [Exclusive]

Posted May 5, 2011 by James Brightman

PlayStation Network's breach has undeniably hurt Sony's reputation and their relationship with consumers, but the wider implications of the hack into PSN and SOE's network is that consumers could become more wary of the digital marketplace as a way to obtain games, and that would be a bad thing since most believe digital is the industry's future.

Speaking with IndustryGamers recently, Silicon Knights founder Denis Dyack provided his thoughts on the Sony fiasco.

"It’s very concerning and I think getting as much information out there - factual information out there as soon as possible is good. I know, personally, I just changed all my passwords because I was an active user of the PSN and I didn’t even want to take a chance. I just started changing all my passwords."

He continued, "It’s concerning from an industry standpoint... digital distribution is the future of our industry and that’s what PSN is and I hope it doesn’t undermine people’s confidence in that delivery medium."

We think in the long-term digital will be fine, but people will probably be more wary of using credit cards, perhaps turning towards point cards.
