PlayStation Move Ad Spot Slams Wii, Natal

Posted March 17, 2010 by James Brightman

Nintendo's Wii is the king of the motion controls space right now, but both Microsoft and Sony are gearing up for an assault this fall on the Wii when the two companies launch Project Natal and PlayStation Move, respectively. IndustryGamers exclusively revealed the introduction of Kevin Butler and Sony's new PS3 marketing campaign 7 months ago, and we've been following the ad spots closely. Each TV spot has been perfectly in line with the new humorous tone that the PS3 advertising has adopted, and it's been a huge improvement over their "white room" ads from a few years ago.

With PlayStation Move having just been unveiled and priced, SCEA is already showing off its new Kevin Butler spot for the motion controller. Check out the video below where Butler not so subtly waves his hands like a girl to diss Wii boxing and compares Natal's controller-less gaming to a third-grader holding a pretend gun. It's definitely funny stuff.

James Brightman has been covering the games industry since 2003 and has been an avid gamer ever since the days of Atari and Intellivision. He was previously the EIC of GameDaily Biz.

LOL i saw the video and it was funny but i know there going to be some 360 and Wii fanboy and fangirl who wii take this video way too serious and spin it with there dislike about Sony . People it's just a You Tuble video nothing more nothing less so don't get hyped up about it LOL the 360 and the Wii will not loose any ground from this but will loose ground if they don't push some new software . Microsoft you need to get off your can cause the PS3 is going to pass since you and your fans think it some kind of race.

LOL that WAS funny I love his commercials! I hope it does get put on TV. I remember people saying the Kriss kringle, Santa Claus, Lebron James, and Kobe Bryant, Youtube series would not get put on TV. Well here it is, they are on TV! This could be a test run like those where.

This could be like a political theater, who will throw the first dirt on the other candidate?
SONY: Who wants to pretend your hand/finger is a gun!
Microsoft: Well who wants to pretend your buttons is a GUN?
Sony: Who wants to box like this (awkward punches)
Microsoft: Who wants to still box with a button like it's 1970?

I hope MOVE does good. The big publishers have said they have about two thirds of there motion support on Microsoft. But I think Sony will have a lot of first party support for the MOVE. I wonder if Microsoft has been working mostly on the NATAL titles these last two years? That would be a reason they have not released as many first party games as Sony.

I can see ICO with MOVE, I can LOVE SOCOM with MOVE.

I hope Sony has been working on MOVE as long as Microsoft has been working on NATAL because NATAL was suppose to be announce at the E3 BEFORE last years E3 and they backed out to make more software for it.

I see something in the FUTURE but before November 2010. It is called a Nintendo WII price cut film at eleven!

Great to see Sony come out swinging. Both Sony and MSFT seem to be taking this motion control assault thing very seriously, not just another peripheral but a bit push. Nintendo should be very nervous because these two heavy hitters are both targeting THEIR customer base, as opposed to each others' for a change.

I'm not sure I've seen that before in the industry; two platform holders simultaneously assaulting a third. Should be interesting. Nintendo's best hope is that they turn on each other instead.

LOL. Great ad. Tried the controller at GDC in SF. Too bad it'll finish third. Wish the controller was as good as the ad.

Great stuff. Manages to be funny without being disparaging. I think Natal and Move both have a large hill to climb as far as getting into households and I don't think I've seen a reason yet why a Wii users would feel the need to ditch their system for what Sony and Microsoft are selling.

Fellow gamers,

Whenever a company's advertising messages focus on trashing the competition instead of highlighting the advantages of a specific product, it is usually because THERE AREN'T any real advantages. I own a PS3 slim and I will be willing to try Move, but I seriously doubt that it will be a revolution.
P.S. Check out that guy playing the shooting game on the video. How long do you think you can play a game placing your body in such an uncomfortable position?

@ nikos 1 it's not a ad just a you tube video 2 everyone play video game in different position so how you play may not be the same as others. you will never see this video on any major network it's just a joke and no one taking it serious and if anybody do they way too serious.

$150-$160 just to play Wii Sports Resort PS3 Edition? Really?
Who are they aiming for, Jordan? Wii owners aren’t going to shell out $460 to play the same stuff. And hardcore PS3 gamers aren’t going to shell out $100 to play Wii Sports Resort.

It's a great thing that both Sony and MS are bringing out motion control hardware. The competition can only be a good thing for consumers. They will all be competing for a share of the market and will have to bring out the latest and most cutting edge games to keep users happy. It will also be good for pricing as previously
Nintendo had no competition in this market niche.

Competition is very good and the one who benefits most are us, the consumers. It will allow us to choose which one suits us best so there will be no regrets later.

Now this is something. Sony's toy is just trying to attack the leading Wii. However, we have to know that in branding itself - Wii has made it first to the public's heart compared to them. Perhaps Sony's toy can beat Wii up but I doubt its probability. Possible but not probable as of the moment. It takes a hard marketing and stuff to compete well with Wii. On the other hand, what I am most concerned all about is the lifetime health condition of those gamers. Because of the influx of new technologies sometimes our behaviors and responses to these technologies would often stray us away from reality.

Competition is a good thing. It gave us the Wii in the first place. Nintendo was just about down and out after their Gamecube failed to meet expectations and they had a lot of ground to gain back and prove themselves all over again when they debuted the Wii. It was unlike anything that they had done before or anyone had done before, they essentially risked everything on it.

If Sony and Microsoft can come up with another turn that is just as original and fun, kudos to them. So far I'm just seeing from the MOVE that Sony's basically trying to "make a better Wii." If they can do it, great, people will buy it.

Seriously how is it possible for Sony to have done a complete 180 on their advertising like this? Every single one of these spots have been so much better than everything they did from 06-08 (this series of ads started with MLB The Show 09.)
