PlayStation 4 Will Not Debut at E3 This Year, says Sony

Posted January 10, 2012 by James Brightman

PlayStation 4 and Xbox 720 rumors have been all the rage in the last week, since a report came out suggesting that both new consoles would be officially announced at this year's E3 in June. Furthermore, IndustryGamers heard from one developer who's expecting one or both consoles to launch by holiday 2012. Well, you can definitely scratch PS4 off the list for 2012 it would seem, since Sony just shot down the E3 debut talk.

According to The Wall Street Journal, Sony consumer products head Kaz Hirai commented during a roundtable at CES, "Andy [House, Sony Computer Entertainment president and chief executive] is absolutely right in that we are not making any announcements at E3."

Hirai added that Sony simply is "not talking about a new home console now" and he reiterated Sony's usual stance on the PS3's 10-year life cycle. He also said that Sony is not in a "rush to replace it with a new system." That said, it's worth noting that Sony has previously commented that it would be "undesirable" to launch the PS4 late, and if Xbox 720 does hit the market by this holiday, then Microsoft will have gained a first-mover advantage yet again.
