Playdom, the leading social games firm on MySpace, may not have the stranglehold on Facebook that Zynga has, but the company did recently acquire several developers, including Offbeat Creations, which has created several successful Facebook titles. Now Playdom is looking to expand its reach by investing in MetroGames, a Buenos Aires, Argentina-based startup.
MetroGames has closed a $5 million investment from Playdom as part of the company's Series A financing. The money "will be used to expand MetroGames' pipeline of games and continued development of its Metrogames.com social gaming platform." In addition to the investment, John Pleasants, Playdom's CEO, will be added to MetroGames' Board of Directors. He joins MetroGames' existing board members CEO & founder Damian Harburguer, and COO & founder Julian Lisenberg.
"We are really excited to partner with such a promising company," said Pleasants. "MetroGames has a proven track record for developing very appealing social games, so we are convinced that with Playdom's help they will become a big player in the social gaming market."
