Peter Molyneux, head of Lionhead Studios, has had a pretty storied career himself, influencing his contemporaries with such titles as Populous, Black & White and Fable. Speaking at BAFTA’s Annual Video Games Lecture [thanks That VideoGame Blog], rather than looking at his own games, the designer cherry picked five titles from the last 20 years that he felt brought the most innovation to gaming.
So which games stood out to Molyneux? He selected Dune 2, Mario 64, Tomb Raider, Halo, and World of Warcraft. We've been bugging Molyneux for some time to participate in our Playing Favorites series, so you can think of these five picks as a precursor to his full list of favorites.
Molyneux said that each of these five titles helped to open up the medium of games to a wider audience, which is something that's been on his mind for a long time. In fact, although Fable 2 was a big success for Microsoft, it sold 4 million copies, which is the same sales figure as his first game Populous. Molyneux wants to do much better than that, and he believes that innovation and creative thinking with ideas like Milo and Project Natal will enable him to reach his goal.
