Pachter Now Admits PSP2 'Actually Could Perform Well'

Posted December 9, 2010 by James Brightman

Although what's known so far about the PSP2 is still not confirmed by Sony (which hasn't even confirmed its existence yet), Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter has been talking about the portable's chances for success in the marketplace. It's no secret that the current PSP has had a tough time in North America (although it's been great in Japan), and Pachter recently said the PSP2 would be "dead on arrival." Today, however, he further clarified his comments, and acknowledged that PSP2 could still succeed... if priced right.

"We can't rule out the 'dead on arrival' PSP2, which is likely to be introduced [next year], and if it has the right feature set and is competitively priced, it could actually perform well in the marketplace," Pachter told IndustryGamers in a soon-to-be published "Pachter's Podium" Q&A column. "My 'DOA' comment was based upon an assessment that Sony won't price it right (look at the PSPgo), but of course, I have been wrong once or twice before, so maybe they'll surprise me."

Whether or not PSP2 does gangbusters whenever it launches, what is true is that more and more gamers are turning to smartphones for gaming on the go these days, and it's having an impact on both Sony and Nintendo.

Pachter says PSP2 will fail....Internet says Pachter only gets it right less than 50% of the time...Pachter says PSP2 wont fail...

This is yet another instance of Michael Pachter making a prediction and getting it wrong. Pachter has great personality and I love watching him on GameTrailers Bonus Round studio discussion his own Pach Attack Q&A. Sure he has some industry contacts and he is an educated man. But when it comes to video games he is the very definition of flip-flop. He sometimes makes predictions which are not based on facts but on his own assumptions. He did this when (amongst other instances) predicting Borderlands to be a sales disaster, Call of Duty subscriptions in 2010, and that Nintendo would release a Wii HD in 2009.

What he revealed in the PAX Q&A was that it is important for him to be recognised by investors, and he keeps himself current by generating headlines. However he damages his credibility when he speaks out on a topic, such as the PSP2 being 'dead in the water' and then quickly backtracks when he realises that other industry experts have criticised him for being potentially very wrong.

I picture him reading the numerous negative comments he gets on this site and others while vigorously wringing his hands saying, "Fools...fools...I'll show them all...I'LL SHOW THEM ALL!!!!"
