Origin Systems IP Not Forgotten at EA

Posted August 13, 2009 by David Radd

Origin Systems created and published several classic games during the '80s and '90s that would help define PC gaming during that era, with franchises like Ultima, Wing Commander and System Shock. Speaking to IndustryGamers, representitives at Mythic Entertainment agreed that there was great potential for the classic IP from Origin.

"There are some folks that feel exactly as you do about Origin Systems," said Mythic Entertainment Development Manager for Ultima Online Calvin Crowner. "I have Crusader: No Remorse on a shelf on my desk and there's tons of stuff that could be done with it; we have some people that are very passionate about these games."

I absolutely loved the Wing Commander series. There were many interesting characters, a fun story, etc. I think a relaunch of that series could do very well.

I'm incredibly enthused and at the same time very dubious about the prospect of those awesome franchises being brought back to life. Origin is sorely missed by a lot of people - a group not to be underestimated in the steadfastness in their fandom. I would know, as I am a standing member of that group. While, on paper, a brand-new Wing Commander or Crusader game sounds like a dream come true, I'm quite terrified to think of the extent to which today's Hollywood-ized games industry could sully those series' collective image. Today's college-bred developers have near zero creativity, and just don't "get" what makes these classic franchises tick.
