OnLive Online On iPhone

OnLive’s potential for gaming on computer monitors and TVs is vast, but the ambitious cloud computing company is not just limiting itself to the living room and den. OnLive Founder and CEO Steve Perlman announced in his blog that the service works on cell phones.

“Today, at a Wedbush financial conference in New York I showed OnLive running simultaneously on 2 iPhones, a TV, and a computer,” wrote Perlman. “What is really cool is that all 4 devices had access to the full OnLive Game Service, so they could play the same games, spectate on each other’s (and Beta users’) game play, watch Brag Clips, check out Gamer Profiles, etc.”

He noted that the gameplay is optimized for computers and TVs, but the networking and social features of the service were what excited him the most about bringing OnLive to mobile phones.

“I’m afraid we are not announcing a date for availability of OnLive on particular cell phones just yet,” concluded Perlman. “We have further development to do, and we need approvals from some cell phone makers before we can release OnLive to the public. So, for now, OnLive on a cell phone is only a technology demo. But, for those of you who have been asking about OnLive on cell phones, the answer is yes, it is coming. And, it is REALLY cool.”

As exciting as I think this is, I have a hunch that because Apple would see absolutely NONE of the revenue from players buying/renting games on the OnLive service, this app would get rejected faster then any other.

I remain cautiously optimistic about OnLive. What I've seen in person has been impressive, but it's not been with thousands or even millions of people taxing a server.

Apple can go screw itself. They have a huge monopoly and act like nazis. If it weren't for the fact that I myself were an iPhone developer, I would seriously start a movement or something. OnLive on the iPhone (although quite unlikely to be fluid) would be absolutely awesome.

I remain skeptical of OnLive's ability to provide their service to a mass audience without lag. A few milliseconds of lag will just destroy a multiplayer game... or the occasional freeze... I just don't think the basic constraints of the network will allow this to work in the real world. For games not dependent so much on fast action multiplayer, sure. But for a multiplayer killfest? Where players will turn down the resolution of the display just to gain a few frames? I don't see it.
