At CES 2012, OnLive has revealed its next project: OnLive Desktop. The app allows iPad users to access full Windows 7 applications on their iPad. The full, touch-enabled Windows 7 experience is remotely hosted on OnLive’s servers and streamed to the user via the app that will be release on the Apple App Store on Thursday.
"OnLive Desktop is the first app to deliver a no-compromise, media-rich Windows desktop experience to iPad, opening up powerful new possibilities for consumers and businesses," said Steve Perlman, OnLive Founder and CEO.
"iPad users will now be able to simply and securely view and edit cloud-hosted documents with full-featured Windows desktop applications like Microsoft Office, just as if they were using a local high-performance PC. Multi-touch gestures respond instantly and smoothly, while HD videos, animations and PC video games-never before usable on a remote desktop-play seamlessly."
The basic, free OnLive Desktop service comes with 2GB of cloud storage and a Windows 7 desktop with Word, Excel, PowerPoint, several games, and other utilities. OnLive Desktop Pro bumps that up to 50 GB of cloud storage with more applications for just $9.99 a month. Finally, OnLive Enterprise is built for businesses with full control of user entitlements and permissions.
Both OnLive Desktop Pro and Enterprise use OnLive’s exclusive collaboration services, allowing multiple users to view a single or multiple OnLive Desktops from any device. This includes live spectating and group voice chat for every user.
It's interesting to see OnLive branching out from gaming with this business tools focus. More information on OnLive Desktop can be found on the official site.
