Obsidian Hit With Unconfirmed Layoffs

Posted April 26, 2011 by M.H. Williams

Despite coming up with all aces currently, Obsidian has apparently laid off a number of employees recently. A post on the official Obsidian Entertainment forums collected a number of tweets by Obsidian employees who have recently been cut.

“11 years, nearly a dozen shipped titles, Designer, Lead, Producer. 1 cancelled game, survived 7 layoffs, 8th got me. Not a bad track record,” wrote producer and designer Akil Hooper.

“No longer work at Obsidian. I guess this means I will have to start buying my own pens,” wrote QA Tester Ashley Betters.

Programmer Justin Reynard indirectly confirmed the layoffs, writing “Today marks my 3 year anniversary working at Obsidian Entertainment. To my coworkers (and sadly the ones we've lost) you guys are amazing.<3.”

Posters also mined the LinkedIn profile of studio head Chris Avellone, citing a number of recommendations he's recently written. These recommendations hints at further layoffs for art director Joe Sanabria, junior designer Sydney Wolfram, junior designer Jessica Johnson, and associate producer Theresa Treadwell.

This is surprising as Obsidian has additional Fallout: New Vegas content, the upcoming Dungeon Siege III, another “big licensed title”, and an Xbox Live Arcade game in development. The developer has yet to confirm these layoffs.
