Nintendo's 3DS is a 'Gimmick,' says Veteran Developer Jon Hare

Posted January 11, 2011 by Ben Strauss

Jon Hare, an industry legend and well-respected developer behind titles such as Cannon Fodder and Sensible Soccer, has come out saying that the 3DS is going to play way too heavily on the 3D aspect of the machine, and that is going to make development suffer. Calling the device a ‘hardware gimmick’, Hare notes that the system focuses too heavily on graphics while it puts gameplay to the back corner.

“The Nintendo 3DS take is interesting, but in my eyes it is just a hardware gimmick which might do well," says Hare. "I am not interested in the limitations and demands of graphical engines. I want 75 percent of the focus of making a game to be on the gameplay and to keep on making it better and better and better until it is ready to be published.

"This is almost impossible to achieve with 3D without a massive budget and a lot of time."

While many are still anxious to see how 3D is going to play into gaming, the device has been well received by critics and fans alike that have been able to try the 3D functionality, especially considering the incredibly strong line-up of titles shown off at E3. Come March, gamers will have a chance to decide for themselves.
