Decreasing sales of the Wii in recent months have been a drag on industry totals for 2009, ending a run of unprecedented demand for the system regardless of the time of year. Speaking to the San Francisco Chronicle, Nintendo of America executive vice president of sales and marketing Cammie Dunaway said that sales are up 85 percent after the $50 price cut for the Wii which brought the system's MSRP down to $199.
"I think going into the holidays, the Wii is in a very good position," said Dunaway. "It has an unbeatable combination of games, experience and unbeatable value, and that continues to put it to the top of people's wish list."
Dunaway noted that one of the reasons for the hardware sales slump was the lack of Nintendo title support, and that titles like Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii should carry the system through the holidays.
Between the above releases and the price cut, the Wii will almost certainly do very well through the holiday period, though we have a feeling the console will have a more traditional sales cycle back ended at Q4 from now on.
