During our time at the Game Developers Conference last week, IndustryGamers sat down with Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime. We spent a fair amount of time discussing third-party support for the Wii and Nintendo's role in the third-party publishing ecosystem. While Nintendo continues to do phenomenally well with the Wii, it does seem that since last fall publishers have been reallocating resources towards PS3 and 360, especially when it comes to core games. We asked Reggie how Nintendo is addressing that situation, and how Nintendo might help out third parties.
"Let me answer the question two different ways. First, as a platform holder our responsibility is to create a large installed base for developers to create content, to provide them with the tools and the insight to help them create great games, and to have in place a profit model that motivates them to create the content and reap the rewards. We've done that; global installed base is over 67 million for Wii and there are 120 million in the DS family. So there's a large installed base, an easy platform to develop for and a strong set of tools out there," Reggie began.
"In addition to that, part of the reason why we come to a conference like this, and bring some of our key development talent is also to challenge the mindset of what content can be. To have someone like Sakamoto-san talk about Tomodachi Collection and [Metroid's protagonist] Samus and share his experiences really is a way that we're trying to encourage developers to open their mind to do different things."
Reggie also questioned the long-term sales curve of the so-called core games. "On the other hand, the interesting thing about this business is that developers love to create technically advanced games, and very visually stunning games, but the fact of the matter is not all of that content is selling exceptionally well either," he said. "Look at the most recent NPD results. I'm not sure how much was infested into a game like Dante's Inferno, or how much is invested into a game like BioShock 2, but if that sales level is the best that they will do in a particular month, and it'll fall off rapidly from there, then those games aren't going to pay off their investment. So to me, it's a much bigger question than 'why aren't developers creating core content for the Wii?' It's a much broader question: 'How can the development community create content that will strike a chord with consumers and be financially attractive?' "
That said, we decided to play devil's advocate with Reggie. Since the installed base is there, from a business standpoint, Nintendo is doing very well and the hardware and software from Nintendo continue to sell. The casual consumer that makes up the majority of the installed base probably only buys a few games a year and is very happy with the Nintendo games that are developed for the platform. And so, the third parties can go do whatever... why should Nintendo care?
Reggie responded, acknowledging that Nintendo absolutely has to continue courting developers for core content: "Well, luckily we don't have that mentality. For us, it is important that third parties bring their very best content to our platform. You could say 'Why?' It's because... well, let me focus in on the West. There are 28 million Wiis out there in the marketplace. We know, based on our data, that we've got consumers from 5 to 95 playing on that platform. The fact of the matter is we know we create great content for younger consumers, we know we've got great content for more casual players, and we want fantastic content for that more active player who loves Metroid or Zelda but maybe also wants something like a BioShock 2 to play as well. And we also recognize that we don't create that type of content ourselves. We're not good at it and it's not a key focus area. So we want that content on our platform, so we have to court third-party developers and encourage them to make [those games], but it also has to be financially viable for them as well."

What he says is mostly true in that there's only so much Nintendo can do as a platform holder. They built the Wii for their needs and expectations, and it's worked brilliantly for them. The games that have been the most consistently successful on from third-parties have generally held close to what's worked for Nintendo: fitness titles, “party” style mini-games and well known properties – it's not really Nintendo's fault that consumers aren't favoring “core” experiences on the Wii.
While a disc release on the Wii would undoubtedly be cheaper than a disc release on PS3/Xbox 360, it still has to sell, but that's only part of the issue. Thing is, the game market incorporates so much more than console releases at retail – it includes digital for all the consoles, and smaller development for the PC and iPhone and even Flash games for “portals” or Facebook, all of which are cheaper and involve fewer hoops to jump through than a retail release. That's why I think we'll see a wider variety of games coming out for more platforms, but it has to fit each of those platforms. High graphical fidelity and online connectivity have proven to be vital to the “core” consumer, but those sort of games are like the home run derby – it's either a success or an out. So, probably, we'll see more games but fewer because of the size of the investment, and on the Wii, we'll probably see more of what's succeeded (see above).

A telling point for me on the Wii is that its consumer base just does not buy enough games to create the hardcore gaming eco-system. Wii consumers are happy with one or two purchases per year...usually an Nintendo 1st party game. From 30k ft a very ripe market, at retail ripe only for Nineteen software.

*sigh* ... it's not hard, folks.
#1. quality + non-niche = monetary success.
RE4, HotD2+3, Tiger Woods games, SW: Force Unleashed, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and the Secret Rings, Shaun White Snowboarding, LEGO Batman, SW, Indy, Rabbids games.
... these are all million plus sellers, btw. games like de Blob still hover in the 800k range.
#2. quality + niche =
DeadSpace Extraction (entered a sea of rail shooters too late after the flood.)
Mad World (do I really need to explain?)
Zack + Wiki (point and click puzzlers aren't exactly on everyone's Christmas lists, are they?)
No More Heroes 1&2 (sales aren't bad at all, but see Mad World's explanation for why neither game is cracking 1 mil anytime soon)
#3. low quality + non-niche =
The Conduit (I loved this game. but I recognize that it is too generic for wild success. devs are "pleased" with sales and a sequel is rumored to be on the way).
---
so anyway, put RE5 on the Wii and watch the money roll in. half-assed products will only get half-assed sales.

That's a mightily generic argument to be making, Joe, with your "quality and non-niche" category including sports, party, action and family titles. BTW, something worth noting is that the House of the Dead 2+3 did sell over a million units early in the Wii's lifecycle, and Umbrella Chronicles did even better. So Capcom, EA and Sega thought they had a winning formula with HotD: Overkill, Dead Space: Extraction and RE: Darkside Chronicles - they were wrong.
Would RE5 somehow do gangbusters if it release on Wii tomorrow? Dunno.. considering it's been out for over year at this point, probably most of the people that want it already have it. It might do numbers that would justify its totally reconversion to the Wii (since that's what it would take) but expectations of it being a breakout hit in the millions are likely unrealistic.

i say RE5 would definately perform well...how long was RE4 out on GC AND PS2 before Wii? and yes it did sell over one million units. how many rail shooters can u have on one system??? ive posted this before but here it goes again.
It seems to me that no matter what, Mr. Radd seems to like to hold up the, ifs, ands or buts, when it comes to Wii games selling as he might not expect. Nintendo among other third parties have confirmed that 54 of the 76 Million sellers on wii are from third parties. So Mr. Radd has to say that NEW ips dont sell well on wii to justify his core games dont sell well on wii, seems interesting to me. Also its not deceptive to exclude CUMALITIVE sales across all platforms when the whole point is Games dont sell on A,B,or C console of choice.
The Following games DONT count for the following reasons....
Guitar Hero III: Legends of Rock ACTIVISON: 4.38m
Guitar Hero: World Tour ACTIVISION: 3.37m
Guitar hero doesnt count because you can play with friends in the same room so its not hardcore enough.
Sonic and the Secret Rings SEGA: 2.20m
Sonic is in the game so it doesnt count
Star Wars: The Force Unleashed LucasArts: 1.45m
Starwars isnt nerdy enough and is now a family game... never mind that this one isnt the lego starwars and its rated teen.
Shaun White Snowboarding: Road Trip Ubisoft:1.45m
He won the gold medal so hes a house hold name...Wait this came out before this years olympics.. well he won a while ago and Its a snowboarding game and kids like snowboarding so its a kids game
Call of Duty: World at War Activision:1.42m
This is a popular franchise and doesnt count because its established, but modernwarfare 2 is different cuz it not on wii yet, but if it comes out on wii then its an estbalished franchise and then it wont count.
Super Monkey Ball: Banana Blitz Sega:1.40m
The original games started on GameCube so this isnt a real Wii game
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 08 Electronic Arts:1.38m
This is Golf and so golf games on wii dont count because golf was on wii sports
Rock Band MTV Games:1.36m
See guitar hero for comment NVM that THIS WAS A NEW IP.
Call of Duty 3 Activision:1.33m
This is Call of duty 3 so it doesnt count because part one and two existed before it.
Resident Evil: The Umbrella Chronicles Capcom:1.32m
The Name sold this game not any other fact.
Tiger Woods PGA Tour 09 All-Play EA Sports:1.28m
See previous Tiger woods comment
Star Wars The Clone Wars: Lightsaber Duels LucasArts: 1.20m
This game is based on starwars and doesnt count because its starwars.
Red Steel Ubisoft:1.19m
This game only did well because it came out when the wii launched....and if part two does well...then its because its not a new IP.
The House of the Dead 2 & 3 Return Sega:1.17m
There is a number 2 and three here so that helped this game oh and its house of the dead. so that doesnt count.
Pro Evolution Soccer 2008 Konami:1.13m
This game doesnt count because soccer is a very popular sport in many countries and thats the only reason this game sold...
Guitar Hero: Aerosmith Activision:1.08m
The Beatles: Rock Band MTV Games:1.07m
See other rock band comment.
Monster Hunter Tri Capcom:1.01m
This is the third monster hunter game and Japan loves monster hunter so this game doesnt count.
FIFA 08 Electronic Arts:1.00m
See pro evolution comment.
Honestly its exactly how it comes off. these games did well because 9 times out of ten they were good games and stood along side more "casual games". Simply put Wii games not selling well is only partially true. they dont sell well or huge numbers when they launch, they have longer tails and sell consistent numbers, slowly but surely they build up and sell well past what people might hve expected, because the game journalist like many gamers are short sighted and have short attention spans, we are always looking to the next release and forget about a game that launched six months ago, by that time the units have passed 250-500 thousand units. and nobody saw it coming, because the people who are buying these titles are busier playing these games and arent the people who read sites like this.
Simply put 3rd party games (Not including 1st party games) Casual or not, New Ip or not, Hardcore or not have sold more Million sellers (54) on wii, than all of PS3s million sellers combined (49).

I'm realy suprised how well the Wii has taken off but in my opinion the game polay isn't that good and it is a minor gaming system. I've got both an xbox and a Wii and whilst using my original broadband connection just wasn't fast enough so i had to search around current broadband deals to find a faster connection.

Every single game Ensemble Studios made, across more than a decade, paid for it's development and made a profit. Microsoft had it's reasons for closing the studio but to imply that it was because we cost too much is fiction. ES enjoyed a long relationship with Microsoft (as many ex-Studios people now at Robot or Bonfire still do), first as a partner and then as part of the corporation after 2001 – if, at any point, the leadership in Redmond wanted to reduce the cost of making games in Dallas, they could have done so with a phone call.IndiaLead Directory

One of the common criticisms levied against Nintendo platforms is that they don't get enough third-party support. Instead, the majority of the best-selling games on both the Wii and DS are made by Nintendo. The company is looking to change all of that, however, with its recently unveiled 3DS.
