Nintendo Sees Three Titles Cross Million-Selling Milestone This Holiday

Not only did Nintendo and its 3DS clean up in Japan this holiday season, but it seems the company’s performance in the United States was equally impressive.  Nintendo has announced that the 3DS has sold more than 4 million units in our region, reaching that number faster than the best-selling Wii did in the same time period.  In addition, The Legend of Zelda: Skyward Sword, Super Mario 3D Land, and Mario Kart 7 have all sold more than 1 million units each.

“One of the strongest software lineups in our history helped Nintendo have a great holiday season and to close 2011 with a full head of steam,” said Scott Moffitt, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of Sales & Marketing.

“Not only have the new Mario and Zelda titles already broken records, but with strong reviews and satisfied customers sharing their positive experiences, all three are also shaping up to be the latest long-tail titles from Nintendo. Couple that with a massive first- and third party lineup in the first part of the year and the prospects for 2012 are extremely promising.”

Nintendo has sold over 12 million hardware units across its entire product line, including 4.5 million Wiis, 4 million 3DS units, and 3.4 million Nintendo DS units. These totals bring the Wii and Nintendo DS installed bases to 39 million and 51 million, respectively.
