Nintendo Can't Understand Why Wii Players Would Upgrade to PlayStation Move

Posted March 16, 2010 by James Brightman

In a recently posted interview on IndustryGamers with Nintendo's Reggie Fils-Aime, we asked the executive about the newly unveiled PlayStation Move, which has controls that are quite similar to the Wii's. Sony clearly believes that a number of existing (or prospective) Wii owners will want a more high-definition experience to complement precise motion gaming, but Reggie doubts this strategy will work for Sony.

"That's the piece that to me is very interesting. So I'm a consumer and I'm having a great experience with my Wii. And we know that's the case – we look at the software that's being purchased. Consumers love the Wii. What's going to motivate them to spend minimally $300 for a new [PS3] system, plus minimally $100 for the Move motion bundle? So [as a consumer] now I'm into this for $400 and I still have to spend money on software. What's going to motivate me to do that?" he questioned.

Reggie continued by talking in generalities about the gaming industry and companies not paying enough attention to the consumer's vantage point. It wasn't directly aimed at Sony, but the implication is there.

"One of the things I find very interesting about this industry is that people don't seem to want to look at propositions from the consumer viewpoint. And I think that's very troubling. We're constantly thinking about how the consumer is thinking about the product. How do they approach it? What's in it for them? Why should I as a consumer open my wallet or pocketbook to buy product X? We constantly think about that, because in the end, if the experience isn't compelling enough, if the value isn't strong enough – and value meaning what you get for what you pay – then there's nothing in it for the consumer. And a product will die. I can look back over the last 2-3 years with products that have died in the marketplace, because they were not thought of from the consumer point of view," he said.

James Brightman has been covering the games industry since 2003 and has been an avid gamer ever since the days of Atari and Intellivision. He was previously the EIC of GameDaily Biz.

I guess Sony & MSFT are asking the legitimate question; ARE Wii gamers happpy with what they've been getting? Obviously they haven't been buying nearly as many games as their XB360/PS3 bretheren. Is that because they just don't play games as much, or they love the games they have SO much they just keep playing them?

No one really knows or understands these consumers well (although everyone claims to). So Sony is banking on the idea that an upgraded experience with HD and better graphics and more core games will win some of them over. Microsoft is betting that an even more radical re-imagining of the controls and novelty will bring them in.

So far, Wii owners seem more swayed by novelty than by core-targeted games. They have tremendous appetite to spend $75 on a balance board, but will they throw $300-$400 to scratch that same itch for new toys?

Nintendo has brushed off suggestions its magic may be fading despite declining sales of its Wii console, as it prepares to unveil a hand-held 3-D device it hopes will drive a new gaming revolution.

I think he is confused as to what an "upgrade" is. But I guess he might be right, there are 28 million more Wii owners out there I bet at some point some of them might want to get a nice blu-ray player and continue playing video games on their Wii. Although I don't think that is the kind of sales he is looking for. Commercial Electrician Sydney
