Japanese sales reports from earlier today showed Nintendo was performing strongly in its home region and the company has followed that up with its own reports for the West. In the U.S., the company asserts that it sold three million Wii units during the month of December, with four million copies of New Super Mario Bros. Wii sold since its launch on November 15. Additionally, Nintendo says that the DS has set a record for most console sales in a calendar year.
“The millions of people who bought Nintendo hardware during the holidays can look forward to enjoying great games on those systems now and in the future,” said Cammie Dunaway, Nintendo of America’s executive vice president of sales and marketing. “The Legend Of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for Nintendo DS, and Wii Fit Plus and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are all currently providing Nintendo fans with amazing experiences and fun adventures for the whole family.”
In Europe, Nintendo says that the DS has become the fastest console to ever reach 40 million units sold since March 2005. Additionally, the Wii reached the 20 million mark since launching December 2006, which is the fastest any home console has reached that milestone. On the software side of things, Wii Sports Resort has moved nearly five million units, the Wii Fit franchise has moved 9.6 million units and achieved penetration into nearly half of all European Wii households and New Super Mario Bros. Wii has sold 2.5 million copies.
