Way back in April, Screen Digest estimated that while Nintendo 3DS would not reach the lifetime sales numbers of the Nintendo DS, it would still sell 11.6 million units this year. Sadly, this year’s sales don’t look like they’ll reach that lofty number, but the system is on track to outperform its predecessor’s first year of sales.
According to the NPD Group, the Nintendo 3DS has sold 1.65 million systems in the United States since its launch in late March. In contrast, the DS only sold 2.37 million units within its first 12 months of availability, giving the 3DS another 5 months to exceed that number. That’s a definite possibility with marquee titles like Super Mario 3D Land and Mario Kart 7 coming out during the lucrative holiday season.
For October, Nintendo sold 250,000 3DS systems, 250,000 Wii systems, and nearly 180,000 DS systems. That brings Nintendo’s total hardware sales for the year to 7 million, with another 55 million software units sold.
Is the plumber’s stereoscopic appearance enough to get you on board with the 3DS this holiday season?
