Nintendo 3DS Sales Already Rising, Confirms Target

Posted August 17, 2011 by James Brightman

Nintendo recently lowered the price on its 3DS handheld following a slower than expected launch period. For the past five days, consumers have been able to purchase the 3DS at a far more reasonable MSRP of $170 (compared to $250). The good news for Nintendo is consumers are reacting positively.

Anecdotal evidence from GameStops across the New York metropolitan area has revealed an uptick in sales, and while GameStop corporate has yet to comment (likely because they're about to announce earnings) and Best Buy decline our request for comment, we did manage to get a hold of a spokesperson for big box retailer Target, who told us that 3DS is definitely picking up. Target declined to give exact data or say what percentage the sales had jumped, however.

"We're pleased with the increased sales results from the 3DS price-cut. The top selling game at Target is The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D," the Target spokesperson told us.

We're not surprised that Ocarina is the top-selling game. Nintendo has already revealed that it's sold over a million copies and Nintendo of America boss Reggie Fils-Aime also recently said that the title has been selling "exceptionally well" and has been "driving hardware."
