Nintendo 3DS Hits 6.68 Million as Wii Approaches 90 Million

Posted October 27, 2011 by James Brightman

Nintendo's mid-term financial report certainly was not pretty, but at least it does show an uptick in 3DS sales since Nintendo lowered the price. Life-to-date 3DS sales now stand at 6.68 million units worldwide, and the Big N has a good chance of seeing the 3DS numbers accelerate this holiday, driven by Mario Kart 7 and Super Mario 3D Land.

Nintendo's current console, the Wii, is clearly slowing down, and other than Zelda: Skyward Sword, there are no major releases on the horizon. The Wii has sold through 89.36 million units so far, but it's fairly clear that Nintendo and third-parties are thinking ahead to next year's Wii U launch.

As for Nintendo's legacy DS, all version combined have now sold an impressive 149 million.

We think Nintendo should consider further price cuts on both Wii and DS to spark sales.
