Nintendo 3DS Hits 5 Million Sold in Japan

Posted February 20, 2012 by Ben Strauss

Nintendo has much to celebrate, now that their latest handheld console has hit over 5 million units sold in Japan, as reported by Media Create. The news means that it took the 3DS a full year to hit 5 million total units, beating out the DS by four weeks and the GBA by six.

The 3DS was marred by many problems at launch, starting out particularly slow thanks to a low amount of first-party and third-party content offerings. The release of many games such as Super Mario 3D Land and Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D has helped sales surge remarkably over the past 12 weeks.

The figures from Media Create and posted to Andriasang are for actual sales figures from retailer to consumers.
