Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 just released, and while the game will likely top everything this holiday season, Nintendo's upcoming New Super Mario Bros. Wii should not be underestimated, says EEDAR analyst Jesse Divnich. "EEDAR feels comfortable to make the prediction that the New Super Mario Bros. for the Nintendo Wii will be one of the top titles this holiday season. While in the short-term the Xbox 360 version of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 may surpass New Super Mario Bros, in the long-term New Super Mario Bros will easily become the best selling title released in 2009 with expected lifetime sales exceeding 15 million units worldwide," he said.
On a recent episode of GTTV, Nintendo of America President Reggie Fils-Aime also predicted that New Super Mario Bros. Wii would at least outsell Modern Warfare 2 on one platform, which he feels is a fairer comparison since the new Mario game is obviously only shipping on one platform.
Leading games retailer GameStop also told IndustryGamers that pre-orders for New Super Mario Bros. Wii have been strong. “We have high expectations for that title. We think it's going to be a strong seller for the holiday. It reminds you of those endearing Nintendo titles of old, and anyone who's played those and really enjoyed them will be flocking to this game. I think we'll have very strong sales on that title and our reservations do support that," said Tony Bartel, Executive VP of Merchandising and Marketing for GameStop.

I thought 'Super Mario Galaxy' was nothing short of AMAZING! It exceeded every expectation I had, and felt more than satisfying to me as both a Wii owner and a Super Mario fan.
But I guess given how super successful 'New. Super Mario bros.' on the DS was (and continues to be), that a Wii sequel was always going to shit on 'Galaxy' sales wise. Then of course there's the accessibility and the target audience Nintendo are hounding with the Wii. Which New Super Mario bros. Wii caters to more than 'Galaxy' did.
