New Super Mario Bros. Wii has been a breakout hit, to the point where its sales are starting to climb the chart of the most successful Wii titles. In fact, the 2D Mario title has already become more successful in the U.S. compared to Super Mario Galaxy, according the the NPD.
The stat tracking group indicates that New Super Mario Bros. Wii has sold 4.2 million copies in the U.S. compared to Super Mario Galaxy's 4.1 million copies; the former title achieved the mark in roughly two months, while Super Mario Galaxy was on the market for over two years.
As IGN points out, Super Mario Galaxy received much better reviews than New Super Mario Bros. Wii, but this is another demonstration that high review scores do not necessarily translate into the biggest sales. Nostalgia helps New Super Mario Bros. Wii a lot in the market, as does its accessibility as a 2D title, but its four-player co-op mode is probably what makes it appeal to such a wide variety of people.
Considering the success of the title and the ease of development compared to a 3D game, we'd expect a New Super Mario Bros. Wii 2 to be inevitable at this point.
