New Super Mario Bros. Sells Almost 20 Million, Mario Kart DS Over 16 Million

Posted October 30, 2009 by James Brightman

New Super Mario Bros. Wii launches here on November 15, and it'll likely be one of the top holiday sellers this year, with legs that probably carry well into next year. As analyst Michael Pachter said, the game "could be a surprise success, as we think that game will resonate with Nintendads (those fathers who grew up playing Nintendo games and who now have an opportunity to play the multiplayer Mario game with their children)."

Following Nintendo's earnings announcement this week, the company released some supplemental information, including a list of its million-sellers on the DS and Wii. Notably, the DS title New Super Mario Bros. is fast approaching 20 million sold, while Mario Kart DS has passed 16 million.

Here's the list of worldwide million-sellers:

  • Pokemon HeartGold Version/SoulSilver Version - 2.27 million
  • New Super Mario Bros. - 19.94 million
  • Mario Kart DS - 16.09 million
  • Tomodachi Collection - 1.45 million
  • Professor Layton and the Diabolical Box - 1.26 million (does not include Japan)

  • Wii Fit - 22.50 million
  • Wii Fit Plus - 2.13 million
  • Mario Kart Wii - 18.36 million
