New Game Sales Are Just 54% of U.S. Market, says Study

New data from the Newzoo Games Market Report shows that consumers are spending more and more on used games and online games in the form of subscriptions, virtual currency, micro-transactions and digital distribution. In fact, the report found that in the U.S. the combination of second-hand trade and online makes up 46% of all money spent on games by consumers aged 8 years and up, which means only 54% of the market is comprised of traditional new boxed products.

New retail games tend to occupy a greater share of the marketplace in Europe, however - 59% in Belgium, 62% in Germany, 64% in U.K., 69% in Netherlands, and a surprisingly high 78% in France.

In terms of the amount of money consumers are spending on gaming, the U.S. far and away leads the global industry. U.S. gamers have a budget of about $25.3 billion. The U.K. by comparison sees its gamers spending around 3.78 billion pounds ($5.6 billion). Check out the chart below, and for more information, you can see the full report here
