New data from the Newzoo Games Market Report shows that consumers are spending more and more on used games and online games in the form of subscriptions, virtual currency, micro-transactions and digital distribution. In fact, the report found that in the U.S. the combination of second-hand trade and online makes up 46% of all money spent on games by consumers aged 8 years and up, which means only 54% of the market is comprised of traditional new boxed products.
New retail games tend to occupy a greater share of the marketplace in Europe, however - 59% in Belgium, 62% in Germany, 64% in U.K., 69% in Netherlands, and a surprisingly high 78% in France.
In terms of the amount of money consumers are spending on gaming, the U.S. far and away leads the global industry. U.S. gamers have a budget of about $25.3 billion. The U.K. by comparison sees its gamers spending around 3.78 billion pounds ($5.6 billion). Check out the chart below, and for more information, you can see the full report here.
