Netflix Coming to Bravia TVs; PS3 Next?

Posted July 9, 2009 by James Brightman

Netflix announced a partnership with Sony Electronics today that will enable subscribers to stream movies directly to Sony's Bravia Internet Video-capable HDTVs (and previous models compatible with the Bravia Internet video link module). Sony joins LG Electronics, Roku, Samsung, TiVo,  Vizio and of course Microsoft (Xbox 360) as electronics partners for Netflix.

The announcement makes no mention of the PS3, but we have a feeling that's only a matter of time now that Neftlix has partnered with Sony. When asked for comment about Netflix coming to PS3, a Sony spokesperson told Joystiq, "We are always looking for content providers for PlayStation Network, but we don't have anything to announce at this time."

We think it's likely that Microsoft has a timed exclusive with Netflix for Xbox 360. The service has done quite well for Netflix and Microsoft and it would be great to see it integrated into the PS3's XMB as part of the PlayStation Network. Blu-ray's great, and it's nice to be able to download videos on PSN, but it's about giving consumers options, and Netflix streaming is a very appealing option to have.

Update: Technically, you can already stream Netflix movies through the PS3 using software from PlayOn, but that software costs $40, and is that really worth it?

This is awesome.
The PS3 might finally get something that the 360 has had for the last year.
What the hell is going on with Sony this gen?

As far as the cost to use PlayOn it may be worth it considering to use Netflix on 360 you at least have to pay that amount to get the Gold subscription. Another bonus would be that you also receive Hulu and other streaming capabilities.
