NCsoft Testing Console Waters

Posted December 1, 2009 by David Radd

When the announced partnership between NCsoft and Sony to make online titles for the PS3 apparently stalled earlier this year, it seemed like the developer would simply revert to being a PC-only publishing company; however, speaking to Gamasutra, NCsoft PR team leader Jin-Won Yun commented that the South Korean publisher is looking seriously at console development again.

“After we finished [PC MMO] Aion we started thinking about what it would take to make an MMO come to consoles,” said Yun. “We’re testing that possibility. We’re not in the development process yet, but we’re in the thinking and planning stages.”

“We believe that there’s potential in multi-platform MMOs, like Final Fantasy XI, for example,” added Yun. “That’s one of the patterns that might be possible, but we’re keeping all options open.”

We think there’s real potential for MMO games on consoles, but they’ll have to be handled differently to appeal to a console audience rather than the usual PC MMORPG audience.
