MTV Games Shutting Down - Report

Posted February 4, 2011 by Ben Strauss

MTV Games has apparently closed down after the sale of Harmonix, it has been revealed by MCV. The main offices have been shut down, save for a few financial staff that are at the New York location reconciling any outstanding receivables.

While MTV Games did meet with Columbus Nova, the purchaser of Harmonix, about a deal to handle remaining sales in Europe, but a decision has since been made to shut down entirely.

While Rock Band 3 was received well by critics, sales of the game faltered as gamers are less and less enthused by music playing styled titles.

This perhaps marks the end of console game development for Viacom, who had recently stated they lacked the expertise to stay in the console games market.

Our condolences to those at MTV Games; we wish you luck and hope you are back on your feet as soon as possible. And if any former MTV member would like to speak with us, feel free to reach out.
