Mortal Kombat Movie Getting Reboot, says Report

Posted January 26, 2010 by David Radd

Despite the fact that the last Mortal Kombat movie was made over a decade ago, rumors have still occasionally swirled about a sequel to Mortal Kombat: Annihilation. Now, Bloody Disgusting [thanks Kotaku] is reporting that another Mortal Kombat film is in the works... but it won't continue the plot of the old films.

Warner Bros. Pictures is apparently inclined to move forward on the reboot of the Mortal Kombat movie series originally proposed back in 2007. Oren Uziel might be hired to pen the movie; he wrote a screenplay titled Shimmer Lake, which was unused though reportedly excellent.

Last Summer, Mortal Kombat movie production company Threshold Entertainment looked to block Warner Bros' acquisition of Mortal Kombat-publisher Midway after asserting that the series was “far more a creation of Threshold and Kasanoff than of Midway.” The complaints were settled, however, and Warner Bros. gained the rights to both the Mortal Kombat movie and game franchises.

Given the reboot happy nature of our pop culture these days (and given the long layoff since the last Mortal Kombat film) starting over was a  natural move for Warner Bros. Hopefully it will take its cues from the first film rather than the horrible, horrible sequel.

Interesting. I wasn't aware that WB picked up the movie rights as well. It would be nice to see an R-rated MK movie, but I think we all know that's extremely unlikely. Hopefully it's better than Legend of Chun-Li and the upcoming Tekken movie.

Mortal Kombat is(still to this day) one of the only TWO excellent video game movies. The other one was Silent Hill.

While everyone makes a big to-do about the PG-13 rating of the original Mortal Kombat movies, I don't think it's necessary to make something that's entertaining. A screen writer and a director that know at least a little about the franchise would be a good start.

Bryan, it should be noted as a cynical long-time Tekken fan, is physically incapable of liking something like the Tekken movie. :p

I really hope it isnt a game teaser. But that looks awesome wonder if Michael Jai White will fight in it too? I do like this reboot!
