It looks like the Mortal Kombat brand is stronger than some expected. Just one week after launching, the first episode of the web series Mortal Kombat Legacy is about to cross 5.5 million viewers. The episode is YouTube’s most watched video for the past week, and is also featured as a part of YouTube Live, the web video service’s live show streaming push.
The ten-episode series is testing the waters for a full-on Mortal Kombat media push from Warner Bros, and it looks like that test may be a success. The previous Mortal Kombat: Rebirth short, also created by Legacy director Kevin Tancharoen, topped out at only 2.1 million views, but it was enough to get Warner Bros’ attention.
“You try to put content in the most ideal environment where the audience is," Thomas Gewecke, president of Warner Bros. Digital Distribution told Variety. "We're incredibly excited about the creative product. It's an incredibly powerful, strong and well done piece of filmmaking. It's a reinterpretation of the franchise in live-action form that we'd like to explore as different concepts and see what approach works best."
All this from the guy who directed another film reboot with 2009’s Fame. Could we see a full-on Mortal Kombat film in the future?
