Mortal Kombat Developer NetherRealm Hopes to Work on New IP

Posted January 30, 2012 by Ben Strauss

The developers behind Mortal Kombat, NetherRealm Studios, have made it clear that they want to do something a little new for 2012.  Traditionally working on the venerated and beloved Mortal Kombat, NetherRealm has expressed their drive to try out a completely new IP.

Speaking to GameSpot, NetherRealm creative director Ed Boon expressed the studio’s collective interest to not be the assumed ‘go-to’ studio for Mortal Kombat development.

“We're working in the Unreal environment, both in our console games as well as the iOS games, so there's a familiarity there,” he offered. “We can share our programming resources, which is great.

“Obviously, the iOS games aren't as long, in terms of how long it takes us to complete the project.  As for future ones, we would definitely like to do additional iOS titles; we have nothing to announce at the moment, but that's generally something we want to do.

“With our studio, we really want to diversify ourselves, and work on multiple formats, multiple types of games, not just Mortal Kombat games.”

Boon's statements echo an earlier Twitter post from the studio, that confirmed several titles were currently in development from the studio.  Of course, this does not mean the end for the Mortal Kombat franchise.  Boon was quick to note that the studio is definitely not against doing more for the franchise.

“We're going to continue in that direction, but I would be surprised if we never did another Mortal Kombat game again,” he surmised.
