An anonymous retail source has passed Joystiq an e-mail, which indicates that Warner Bros’ Mortal Kombat reboot will utilize an online pass. Much like EA’s system, those who buy the game new will receive a one-time use code and those who purchase used will have to pay $10 or 800 Microsoft Points for the chance to duke it out online. It’s also hinted that Warner Bros Interactive may be looking to do the same for its other releases, including F.E.A.R. 3 and Batman: Arkham City.
“Mortal Kombat, available on April 19 for the PlayStation 3 computer entertainment system and the Xbox 360 video game and entertainment system from Microsoft, includes a one-time-use registration code that gives players access to all online modes in the game. Players who do not have a code will get a free two-day trial of the online play and then be able to purchase the online modes for 800 Microsoft Points on Xbox LIVE Marketplace and $9.99 on the PlayStation Network,” reads an excerpt from the e-mail.
The Online Pass, pioneered by EA, is gaining traction in the industry as publishers look to monetize the sales of used games.
