The Monster Hunter series has been phenomenally popular in Japan, particularlly on the PSP platform. Today, Capcom announced that at least some of the demand has translated to the Wii platform, as Monster Hunter Tri has shipped one million units in Japan.
According to Capcom, this makes Monster Hunter Tri the fastest shipping third-party Wii title in Japan. Capcom also notes that the Monster Hunter series has surpassed 10 million units shipped worldwide. Monster Hunter Tri will be available for purchase in Japan on August 1.
It'll be interesting to see if Monster Hunter Tri both revives Nintendo's Wii business in Japan and gives hope to third-parties looking to release titles on the system.

I can't understand what Japan sees in this series. I own the first PSP iteration and it didn't seem like anything special to me.

You got me. It's like a more action oriented MMO, so maybe they just have a hard-on for something like Phantasy Star Online.
