On the conference call following Activision Blizzard's impressive Q2 results, Activision Publishing CEO Mike Griffith called the upcoming Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 "the must have" title of the year. Activision and analysts have already talked about their huge expectations for the title, and Griffith hammered home that point on the call.
"The original Modern Warfare was released two years ago and has sold almost 14 million units worldwide life-to-date. The excitement for the next installment is evident by the largest pre-orders in Activision history," he said. Griffith added that in addition to collector's SKUs (and night vision goggles) Activision is planning two DLC map packs for the game and is very optimistic based on the strong success previous Call of Duty map packs have seen. Previous map packs have sold over 8 million units on Xbox 360 and PS3, he said.
On a side note, regarding one of Activision's other big title launches this holiday season, Tony Hawk: Ride, Griffith noted that Activision will only ship the game in North America, U.K. and Germany "to satisfy initial demand," with other territories to follow in early 2010.
