The ESRB has long been responsible for controlling industry-wide content on console and PC titles. With mobile, though, there has been a glaring loophole for some years now, one that the ratings board is now looking to close with the help of the Cellular Telecommunications Industry Association. Both groups have announced that they will be working together to create a standardized rating system for mobile apps and games.
Developers have long had to decide for themselves how to work on ratings from around the mobile dev space. Apple allows for a rating system that ranges from ages 4+ to 17+ while Android can label ratings from ‘Everyone’ to ‘High Maturity.’
The new initiative will help to rate the ever-increasing amount of apps that continue to populate the App Store and Android market. ESRB has been able to rate well over 21,000 games since 1994. With the growing number of apps, that number is sure to jump substantially in the coming months.
