Miyamoto Wants More New IP At Nintendo

Posted July 1, 2010 by M.H. Williams

At E3, Nintendo dropped a new title for every one of its existing franchises: Mario, Zelda, Metroid, Donkey Kong, Kirby, and even Kid Icarus. It looks like the old franchises just aren’t enough for the company though. According to report in the Japanese Sankei Shinbun, game designer legend Shigeru Miyamoto said, “We need new game characters soon, maybe we can move forward on that next year,” when asked about Nintendo’s next title.

At the meeting one stockholder discussed the possibility of Nintendo producing software for the Apple iPad. “Other companies are continuously bringing out interesting devices. What about supporting them with Nintendo software?” asked the stockholder.

Nintendo President Satoru Iwata quickly gave him the lay of the land. "Nintendo's software and hardware are the same thing. Other companies don't share Nintendo's values or traditions when it comes to creating devices. We are absolutely not thinking of doing that,” Iwata responded.
