Having just launched this past weekend, New Super Mario Bros. Wii will soon be in the hands of eager fans everywhere this holiday season. Many fans will enjoy the nostalgia for older Mario titles and others will no doubt love the game’s multiplayer capabilities. Shigeru Miyamoto, however, describes the game’s throwback design in different terms.
"It was a courageous choice for the developers," said Miyamoto to Famitsu [thanks 1UP]. "We went with a very orthodox Mario despite the capabilities of modern game systems. With this game, though, our only really overall goal was multiplayer. I figured that as long as multi-play was fun, then simpler would be better for everything else, both to players and to us creators. To put it bluntly, I would've been just fine with basically making a multiplayer Super Mario World. That's not too terribly interesting, though, so our goal was to create a new and serious 2D Mario, insert multiplayer into that, and make it enjoyable for all walks of gamer."
New Super Mario Bros. Wii is many things, but it’s hard to think that a multiplayer retro game is a “courageous choice” during a time when both multiplayer and retro titles are in vogue.

Look, I love Mario and this is a no brainer buy for me but these quotes are just pathetic. I'm tired of Nintendo trumping themselves up like this, trying to make this game into something it's not. Yes the game is awesome but not for the reasons you think it is!
Nintendo, I'm going to buy your game even though it is overpriced, and you know it. But it's ok, I'll buy it cause this is the game we want. Or very close to it. But don't kid yourself, this game could be done on the DS. In fact this game was done on the DS. This game is like the lost levels of that game.
