Mirror's Edge Leaping Into Sequel Territory

Posted June 12, 2009 by David Radd

Speaking to Videogamer.com, senior vice president of EA Games Europe Patrick Soderlund confirmed that work has already begun on a sequel to Mirror's Edge.  The fate of the IP had been in doubt, after disappointing sales and reviews that criticized the game as short, frustrating and poorly narrated.

More free running and less shooting, please.

Mirror's Edge was a risky move. It was a bold move, a very innovative and inspiring move. The game wasn’t perfect by any means. We would have liked the game to sell better even though the game has sold better than most people think,” said Soderlund. “You will see another Mirror's Edge for sure. It’s just a matter of when that time is and what we do with it. We have a small team on it and I’m excited about what we do.”

The ideas behind Mirror's Edge struck us as more cool in theory than they were in practice, so hopefully EA Dice can smooth certain issues out for the sequel.

I think the end of this news post hit the nail on the head - Mirror's Edge is better on paper than in practice. It still would have been a shame to let such an innovative and rich concept go to waste, so I'm glad a sequel was greenlit.

I personally enjoyed playing Mirror's Edge after an initial adjustment period. First-person platforming is very difficult to pull off, but with a little tweaking of the gameplay and a lot more variety (the repetition was brutal) EA could have something very cool. I'm glad to see EA pushing forward with new IP and unique concepts like this.
