Tim Schafer, and by extension Double Fine Studios, has not created a triple-A title since 2009. In that time, the independent team has pushed out multiple smaller downloadable titles, and even a wondrous Sesame Street Kinect game. Fans of the studio continue to point out that a sequel to Psychonauts should be in the works, and even Mojang’s ‘Notch’ has offered to help pay to get the game going.
Markus ‘Notch’ Persson took to Twitter, offering to “Make Psychonauts 2 happen.” He then added that he was “serious” in a later tweet when prompted by Rock, Paper, Shotgun.
The push by Persson seems to stem from an earlier interview by Schafer, who accused publishers of being too frugal when it came to working on smaller IP. He noted that his attempts to pitch a sequel “several times” went unheeded.
The main hurdle seemed to be money, and now that Minecraft’s creator is looking to get it done, the project could very well become a reality. Psychonauts was released in 2005 on the Xbox and PS2, garnering a cult following. It is still considered one of the best games ever made by many within the industry.
Schafer has already replied; “Oh wait. Hm. This is interesting.”
