Microsoft's Greenberg Says PS3 Blu-ray Costs Helped Xbox 360

Posted March 16, 2010 by David Radd

Some have felt that the lack of a Blu-ray (or HD-DVD) drive will hamper the Xbox 360 in the long term as the physical size of games continues to increase. Microsoft director of product management Aaron Greenberg, however, thinks that the lack of Blu-ray capabilities in the Xbox 360 is actually a plus.

“We’ve just taken a different strategy. Sony bet on the physical disc, and there are costs associated with that,” said Greenberg to Edge. “The fact that we’re able to offer a console starting at $199 is a benefit of not being burdened with that cost. Being $100 cheaper is part of the reason why we’re nearly twice their installed base.”

“For us, our bet was on digital distribution, that that was the future – the ability to do 1080p movies with no disc, no download required; we have the largest movie and TV library, the largest HD library of any console,” he continued. “Sure, there are trade-offs, but the convenience of pushing a button and watching a movie instantly is, we think, pretty appealing. The great thing is that we built the heart of the Xbox 360 for continuous innovation. We can always add more features and functionality, and you don’t have to buy new hardware to do that. You can do it through software updates. So someone who buys a 360 today can know that one, two, or three years from now they will get a whole variety of new experiences that make it better through Xbox Live. That sort of thing has never existed before in our industry.”

The only real downside to not having blu-ray or hd-dvd is that some games will have to be on multiple disc. But I didn't complain about that during the PS1 days so I won't complain about it now.

I agree with everything said... streaming HD movies is a fantastic feature of xbox live. But I gotta say, the selection of movies it completely rubbish. I could count on one hand the number of must-see movies available (at least ones I haven't seen a hundred times before).

Amazing, but late. The big flood of third party Sony developers to the Xbox360 has already happened. Xbox360 users will love Rachet, and Clank. The developer will get more money and therefor more funds for other projects for both systems. It is a win-win situation (except for pushing PS3 console sales). online fax

i hope the developers prove me wrong, or at least we see highly responsive and convincing head tracking, which keep in mind only works for one person in the room, and for the others itll look messed up.id protection comparison

The taskbar has seen the biggest visual changes, where the Quick Launch toolbar has been replaced with pinning applications to the taskbar. Buttons for pinned applications are integrated with the task buttons

Ultimately Split Second is a forgettable title that you’ll remember as fondly and as long as you will the last meal you had at TGI Fridays. However, unlike the subject of that last simile, it is not totally without merit. id credit monitoring

This sounds simple, and it is, but it's also amazingly effective. The computer's taunting is more compelling than achievements and gamerscore combined, the sense of schadenfraude when completing a difficult level is palpable.ecommerce site

Sci-fi didn’t bother doing this, because sci-fi culture itself has a lot more diversity and it’s all at the surface level: you can instantly see that “Oh, this is about robots. shopping cart solutions

As someone who has two work with all 3 consoles and all related methods of control related to them I gotta say Natal is the most refreshing change of pace from the daily grind. I don't know if I can handle another wand flicker at home but I can definitely fall in love with Minority Report UI navigation from my massive foam beanbag style chair even if it turns out to just be a dashboard novelty (which it certainly isn't *wink wink*) online fax

Whether a professional gamer is a subtype of the hardcore gamer largely depends on the degree to which a professional gamer is financially dependent upon the income derived from gaming. So far as a professional gamer is financially dependent upon gaming, the time spent playing is no longer "leisure" time.online driver scanner

This is just a symptom of the constrained market that AAA MMOs have been operating in. If you look at the MMO-like social games, we see a far broader array of genres being used quite successfully, and I would expect that trend to continue. Fantasy as a genre is a lot more mainstream than it used to be a decade or two ago, but I don’t think it is an accident that we see Mafia, farming, and restaurants as top genres in social games. online fax
