Microsoft today unveiled details about XNA Game Studio 4.0. The software tools allow for the development on the Windows Phone 7 Series and will be available for download in the coming month.
XNA Game Studio 4.0 is designed to handle both 2D and 3D games and will allow games created on previous versions of XNA to be adapted for Windows Phone 7 Series. This will integrate with Windows Phone 7 Series features like the Game Hub (allowing for Xbox Live achievements and access to leader boards, friends lists and avatars) and the Marketplace Hub (allowing users to download games and apps to their phones).

If it really takes off, why would people feel compelled to buy a new console? And thus why would the console manufacturers expend the massive resources needed to develop a new console when their capacity to get return on that investment has been drastically curtailed?
