Microsoft, Sony Both Pleased with February Results

Posted March 12, 2010 by David Radd

With the Xbox 360 set as the top selling console for February 2010 according to the NPD, Microsoft was eager to trumpet its success. They noted that they continue to lead in third-party sales with $170 million for the month, led by BioShock 2 and Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2, which placed first and third respectively. They also noted that 48 percent of online gamers use Xbox Live and that Xbox 360 gamers log 7.3 hours per week, more than other consoles or PC.

“Thanks to a stellar portfolio of exclusive blockbuster games, a fresh pipeline of new content on Xbox Live and high anticipation for controller-free gaming and entertainment with 'Project Natal' for Xbox 360, I’m pleased to announce we had the biggest February in Xbox 360 history,” said Dennis Durkin, Chief Operating Officer for Microsoft's Interactive Entertainment Business. “This month’s NPD results are a further proof point to what will be our biggest – and best – year in Xbox history.”

While the PS3 continues to be in third place compared to the other consoles, sales were greatly improved over February 2009. SCEA also implied they're still playing catch-up with demand after a busy holiday.

“There continues to be incredible demand for PlayStation 3, but tight inventory is definitely having an impact on recent sales numbers,” said Patrick Seybold, Senior Director of Corporate Communications for SCEA. “That said, we’re still tracking to sell 13 million PS3s worldwide by the end of March, which marks a 30 percent increase over last fiscal year. In February, PS3 was the only platform to see double digit growth when compared to the previous year and the platform is showing no signs of slowing down. This year will once again showcase how deep and broad our content offerings are with breakout titles like Heavy Rain, which ranked in the top ten in February with only a week of sales in the month.”

At Sony camp:
See! I told you to ship more! Why did you say we have tight inventory the investors dont want to hear that! ANSWER: Yeah but it makes them think they will have even more next month!

At Microsoft camp:
See they mentioned their shortgage! Why didn't you have the presence of mind to mention the shortgage on one of our SKU's? ANSWER: Because they may figure out we are changing our Sku to a large size and hold off on purchasing the 120gig!

At Nintendo camp:
