Microsoft Reveals New Details About Xbox Live Update

Posted October 19, 2009 by Robert Workman

Microsoft is hard at work putting the finishing touches on its latest update to the Xbox Live service, and, as promised at its E3 2009 showcase earlier this year, there’s a lot to look forward to.  The much-heralded Twitter and Facebook networks join the service, enabling users to update their friends on what they’re doing and what games they’re playing.  Furthermore, they’ll be able to share pictures through Facebook and see what popular gaming trending topics are going on through Twitter, adding to the discussion with their own opinions.

The Zune video service is another integral part of this Xbox Live update.  Viewers will be able to cue up on-demand movies, TV shows and other programming in full 1080p and 5.1 channel surround sound, without needing to worry about ridiculous loading times.  You’ll also be able to hold movie parties through Zune, just like you could through Netflix.  Up to seven friends can join you in watching a program, providing live chat commentary through their avatars.

Music is featured heavily in this update too.  The Last.fm service will be included, allowing you to turn your Xbox into an interactive jukebox with over 3.5 million songs to choose from.  You’ll be able to pick and choose your favorites, “loving” certain songs and “banning” other ones from your list.  (So if you ever wanted the opportunity to ban Kanye West from your Xbox without interruption, here’s your chance.)  Dedicated music games will also see their own interactive stores added to the service in the future, so players can pick and choose what they wish to download for Guitar Hero 5, Lips and the Rock Band games.

Finally, the Inside Xbox channel will see expansion with a "News and More" section.  Using constantly updated news from The New Yorker, MSN Autos, MSNBC.com and the Dilbert comics, you’ll be able to keep in touch with your daily quota of news without needing to turn off your console.  Microsoft needs to add an IndustryGamers portal, pronto!

All in all, this looks like a nice step forward for the Xbox Live service.  The Facebook and Twitter applications will add a new social outlet, while Last.fm and Zune will keep the entertainment coming for hours. The update is planned for November, although an exact date wasn't provided.
