Microsoft Approached About U.S. Deficit Game

Posted April 14, 2010 by David Radd

The U.S. federal deficit is quite large at this point, and while there are numerous options to reduce it, it would most likely involve reducing entitlements like Medicare and Social Security, which is politically unpopular. Erskine Bowles, co-chair of Obama's fiscal commission, has approached Microsoft's Steve Ballmer about creating a deficit-reduction video game to both educate the public and generate new ideas.

"What you could get is support among the populace for the exceptionally unpopular things you need to do to solve this problem," said Erskine Bowles, co-chair of Obama's fiscal commission to USA Today [thanks Edge].

Democratic Senator Bob Kerrey believes that such a game has a potential to "go viral."

So what are we talking about here, like a Flash game? Will it be played on your web browser, or on your xbox? If it's a money management game like Cashflow or Monopoly, I think this scheme might actually work.
