After teasing a "big" announcement via Twitter over the holiday weekend, publisher LucasArts today announced that it's signed on with Valve's Steam service to deliver numerous classic games as digital downloads for the first time ever. This initiative to revive its classic franchises begins on July 8 with 10 titles:
- Armed and Dangerous
- Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
- Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade: The Graphic Adventure
- LEGO Indiana Jones: The Original Adventure
- LOOM
- Star Wars Battlefront II
- Star Wars Republic Commando
- Star Wars Starfighter
- The Dig
- Thrillville: Off the Rails
“This effort is going to make it possible to introduce a whole new generation of gamers to LucasArts’ classic games,” said Darrell Rodriguez, president of LucasArts. “It also gives more people a chance to play our games by making them available long after they’ve disappeared from store shelves. We hope our fans are as excited as we are about our plans and we can’t wait to share what’s coming next. This is just the beginning.”
LucasArts said that it plans to make future announcement about more back catalog titles coming to Steam via its Twitter page. We think this is great for gamers, and we hope more publishers follow suit. It's also a nice way for publishers to generate incremental revenue for titles that were considered to have already run their course long ago.
