Louisiana Passes Game Company Tax Credit Bill

Posted July 10, 2009 by David Radd

While certain members of the U.S. government treat video games like a criminal activity, some thankfully acknowledge their positive effect on the economy and on job creation. Louisiana Governor Bobby Jindal fell squarely in the latter category today by signing into law Digital Media Act, Senate Bill 277.

“We commend Governor Jindal for his strong leadership as well as that of Senator Duplessis for expanding the state’s computer and video game development and production base, and helping lead the way in creating the next generation of entertainment innovation in Louisiana,” said Michael D. Gallagher, president and CEO of the ESA. “Developers and publishers live and work for years in states where games are created, providing a higher return on investment than any form of entertainment.”

The bill, sponsored by the State Senator Ann Duplessis, will give computer and video game companies a 25 percent tax credit for certain expenditures in Louisiana and a 10 percent credit on state payroll taxes. The hope is that this incentive program will expand the Creole State's appeal to the interactive entertainment industry.
