Lord of the Rings Online Revenue Has Tripled Since Free-To-Play Switch

Like Dungeons & Dragons Online before it, Turbine’s Lord of the Rings Online has benefitted greatly from the switch to a free-to-play business model. When we checked in on the game in October, revenues had doubled only a month after the switch. Well, Turbine Director of Communication Adam Mersky mentioned in a TenTonHammer podcast that revenues have now tripled in just three months.

"We are super-pleased with how so many of our players have responded fantastically," said Executive Producer Kate Paiz. "We're getting so many new players in and the world feels alive and vibrant."

"This really echoes a lot of what we've seen throughout the entertainment industry in general. It's really about letting players make their choices about how they play. People are like 'I own my choices. You give me the power and I'll decide if you're cool enough for me,’” she added.

The new business model is definitely working out for Turbine, as players can still play for additional adventure packs or purchase a monthly VIP subscription.
