Turbine, having been acquired by Warner Bros Entertainment in late April, is looking for a change. The company already has one premium MMO under the free-to-play model with Dungeons & Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited. The switchover from subscription-only to free-to-play saved the slowly-dying MMO and allowed it to reach over 1 million players. Yesterday, Turbine announced that their award-winning Lord of the Rings Online MMO will be following its little brother and converting over to F2P with its next major update.
The title will have a new pricing model: players can download and play the game for free, with any any other additions including expansions, quest pack, items, and account services being purchased separately from the new LOTRO store. Players who prefer the old subscription fee model can join the VIP program and continue paying a monthly fee to receive exclusive benefits like priority server access, more character slots, and full customer service. Those interested in a sneak peek can sign up for the new Beta program beginning on June 16, 2010.
“Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment is bringing quality games based on The Lord of the Rings to multiple platforms, and the franchise’s expansive adventure story lends itself perfectly for LOTRO free-to-play, giving a wide range of players the opportunity to experience the game,” said Warnes Bros Interactive SVP Jeff Junge. “We are focused on expanding our game franchises onto new digital platforms to maximize quality experiences for gamers worldwide and LOTRO’s new model is a great leading example of this.”
“Turbine’s Dungeons and Dragons Online: Eberron Unlimited was the world’s first truly premium free-to-play online game that ushered in a new era of choice for online gamers seeking quality entertainment,” said Jim Crowley, Turbine CEO. “The popularity of DDO validated the extraordinary demand by gamers for quality entertainment they can experience at their own pace and within their budget. Extending free-to-play to LOTRO will offer another premium game to a broad spectrum of fans.”
“Having successfully taken two titles free-to-play in the past we are very pleased to be doing the same with The Lord of the Rings Online in Europe,” said David Solari, General Manager of Codemasters Online, the game's European publisher. “It’s a fantastic, award-winning game with a wonderfully realized world and this step will only broaden its appeal and increase its player base.”

England Tiffany have not
reached the semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup for twenty years. It was in Italy in 1990 that Bobby
Robson's team progressed to those latter stages but failed to get past West Germany who beat them
on penalties after extra time. West Germany had gone ahead after an hour through Brehme but Gary
Lineker equaised ten minutes from time to take the game into extra time and the dreaded penalty
shoot out. West Germany scored four penalties but after Lineker, Peter Beardsley and David Platt
had scored Stuart Pearce and Chris Waddle missed their spot kicks to send West Germany into the
Final.
Quarter Finals in 2002 and 2006
England have lost out in the quarter-finals in the last two finals losing on penalties to Portugal
in 2006 and succombing to Brazil four years earlier in Japan after taking a first half lead
through Michael Owen. Brazil equalised in added time at the end of the first half through Rivaldo
and Ronaldinho scored the decisive goal early in the second half to eliminate Sven Goran
Eriksson's team.
Capello's Target
However, disregarding England's disappointing record in the World Cup finals, the current manager,
Fabio Capello, Tiffany has
set a high target for his squad this year. After a very successful qualification campaign, he
expects England to reach the semi-finals in South Africa, at least, and is hopeful that they could
even go on to win the competition . He is confident that he has the players at his disposal who
could accomplish that challenge.
Capello regards England as one of the top four European teams who are capable of winning the
competition and he thinks that it is time for a European side to win outside of Europe. In a very
positive assessment of England's chances in South Africa, Capello feels that his players are good
enough to beat any team because they are can play to the same level as any of the other teams.
Wayne Rooney: 'A Top 3 Player'
The manager regards Wayne Rooney as one of the top three players in the world, setting alongside
his former team mate, Christiano Ronaldo of Portugal, and the Argentine Lionel Messi. Each player
has their own individual qualities - pace, imagination and strength with Rooney having that
greater strength to face any opposition.
If England were to reach the Final, Capello is hoping to play against his home nation, Italy.
However, while he describes Italy as 'his country' for that final he would be wearing the white
shirt of England.
1966 - Alf Ramsey Aims High
Capello has set a high goal for his players and the last manager to set such an exacting target
was Alf Ramsey who shortly after taking on the roll of England manager announced that England
would win the World Cup in 1966. He was reminded of that claim on many occasions over the next few
years but Ramsey had the last laugh when Bobby Moore lifted the Jules Rimet trophy at Wembley
after an exhilerating victory over West Germany.
