LittleBigPlanet quickly became one of the most acclaimed titles on the PS3, and despite somewhat underwhelming sales initially, the game gradually racked up respectable sales and prompted the recent release of a Game of the Year Edition. With this success in mind, you'd think that Sony would be planning a sequel, but developer Media Molecule doesn't appear too keen on the idea. Level designer Danny Leaver indicates that a PS3 sequel is unlikely, due to a desire not to split the community.
“We’d never want to do that," said Leaver to Critical Gamer. "That’d be the most counterproductive thing you could do I think."
Producer Martin Lynagh indicates that for now fans should simply expect more updates and DLC releases, rather than a sequel. “I think what you’ve seen so far from LittleBigPlanet, that’s the way it’s going to continue,” he said.
We applaud Media Molecule for their reasoning and not releasing incremental versions when such tactics are depressingly common in the gaming industry. Maybe if they eventually work up a version of the game with changes that just can't be handled by DLC, we'll see a LittleBigPlanet 2.
